Hunting for the entrance to this unpretentious French restaurant—it’s hidden in the basement of an apartment building, a 10-minute walk from Harvard Square—is part of the fun. Once you've taken a seat among the red banquettes and vintage French posters, though, the real delight begins. Chef Tony Maws is single-mindedly driven by what’s in season; his menu changes daily according to what he finds at the market that morning. But his dishes (which might include farm-raised pheasant with brussels sprouts and braised chestnuts) are always creative, hearty, and precise.

Tip: If you have trouble choosing from the fabulous, all-French wine list, ask your server for pairing suggestions.
